the first track, moaning, has a linear feeling at the beginning: a layer of bass lines makes your feet move instantly until some subtle piano sounds come in at the perfect moment. it creates an atmospheric vibe and when the bass kicks in again, everything seems to fall into place. cosmjn’s interpretation is, as expected, more serious and it has a no-nonsense approach: stripped of the melodic piano sounds, a strong bass line takes over, which makes for an interesting contrast to the original track.
if moaning was a more gentle track, fr sa su is a little bit different: dance floor oriented, the rhythm is certainly higher and it has some intriguing background sounds that go hand in hand with the powerful bass that grows on you from the start of the track. the florian meffert remix closes this ep and it goes out on a strong note: it is a complex track with very different elements and sounds that complement each other just right to get things going.

the number of bad luck is the number of good luck in our world. antoine harispuru aka golden bug is back on lddlm with what has been a constant night hit for ivan smagghe since he magically received it. we are very happy to share it with you. progress feat. diego holdez kind of defies categorisation, and blows the walls of the classic slow downed clocks of golden bug. we d describe it as vocal funk? you may describe it the way you want. ask your girlfriend, she seems to love it. on remix duty, miami come berlin bad boy danny daze a rest from the big room for a pounding omnidisc version that will slowly burns through any leather jacket, very corrosive stuff. physical disco is classic golden bug, a demented industrial pinball machine of some kind. whilst supernova is that exact machine played by a retro-futurist vocoder robot. think aux 88 played at 33rpm and you ll be as close as you can.

no bad days is back for round 2. ‘in the galleria’ slides in with dreamlike pads and a real euphoric feel to the whole track. just right for those balearic sunsets. second on the a side is ‘celestial bodies’ - a melodic freestyle jam that makes us feel like we’re down at the arcade playing ‘out run’ on a dusty mega drive.
over to the flip we start off with the title track, ‘lunar waves’ beginning with a tougher feel it hints at a hardware acid workout... but half way in roberto hits you with those dreamy pads again and just has us in his hands for that synth solo at the end! rounding off the ep perfectly is ‘when u come around’, a real ‘end of summer sitting down at the park with your mates’ kind of track...mmm...

fortuna records have gone all out and reissued one of the most insane, far out records to have ever come out of lebanon. originally released in 1980, raja zahr’s “drum sequence” is a ‘get crazy’, experimental disco monster, utilizing middle eastern percussion and analog synthesisers, so mind boggling they would keep any dancefloor begging for more. and there is more. two additional tracks of lebanese percussion madness by raja make this an essential triple banger previously known only to serious collectors with cash to burn. meticulously remastered for club use and approved by mr zahr himself, this crispy 12” is one for the freaks. so go on then.

them records welcomes back hiroaki iizuka for the its fifth outing. having supplied the the run as the labels first record, here iizuka doubles its play time and track listing length in his stunning voodoo ep. the extra time offered allows iizuka to flex more of his versatile style. them as a label sets out to eschew a techno norm largely made up of a traditional 4 x 4 sound. having come from a london background, the curating of the label gives a nod to the rave sounds of the capital - especially d&b, garage, breakbeat hardcore and grime. that is to say of course along with its characteristic aesthetic of horror and the gothic.
in iizuka them found a common ground: based in hokkaido, japan, iizuka does not share the same london influences, yet shares their base values and thrust. common themes of his sound involve broken and syncopated beats, and a rave energy. this is what lead him to being the first and prime them stable artist. voodoo ep showcases this breadth of iizuka’s style, from tracks that could easily fit into any grime set, such as primitive acid, to the more melodic tones of floating point, in which hiroaki guides them into previously untrodden ground for the imprint.
